One of the most common complications of Bakersfield lasik is having dry eye. If the condition is persistent for a few months the eye doctor can diagnose it as dry eye syndrome. The eyes of the patient who had lasik cannot produce tear stripping the eyes of moisture. Itchiness, irritation and inflammation are the most common sensations in the eye that they experience that are related to dry eye.

How will you know if you have dry eye syndrome? The most common symptoms are continuous dryness and burning sensation in your eyes. Some patients feel that their eyes are so dry that they have become like fireballs especially on hot weather. Sometimes people get dry eyes as side effect of dehydration but with this condition, even if the patient has just washed their eyes, the eyes feel dry after a few minutes.

The doctor tests if a patient has dry eye syndrome by what they call the Schirmer test. This test actually measures the amount of tears produced in your eyes. When you had lasik surgery, the nerves that instructs your glands to produce tears may have been wounded by the incisions. While the nerves are healing, the glands will not be able to produce tears.

Another common symptom of dry eye syndrome is the sensation that something is in the eye like sand or foreign object. Some patients who always have watery eyes can also be diagnosed with dry eye because the excessive dryness cause the overproduction of tears.

Dry eye syndrome as complication of Bakersfield lasik is only temporary. You will be given prescription for the condition. After a few weeks, when the incision in your eyes have healed, the condition will also go away.
